According to network experts email attachment opening is the most common way computers become infected with malware. Our approach to this common problem is to be highly suspicious of all attachments.
No vendor, shipper, bank, telecom carrier or government will ever ask you to open an attachment. Attachments sent from personal contacts without at least a sentence or two in the body can also be considered suspicious.
The formula is generally some company asking you to look into something regarding your account, subscription, settings, service or bill. All these companies are aware that this is going on in their name and there is only one thing they can do - not send you an attachment.
(If you become infected with a malware that encrypts your files, pay the $300 ransom, if you attempt to fix will make it so that your files are unrecoverable, they use the above entities to send an attachment. It has always been and will always be impossible to 100% stop their emails - your diligence is the first, best and last line of defense against "socially engineered" email attacks.)
