POP3 StorageStoring messages in POP3 mode on the server to share between multiple workstations or perform some synchronization will work, but only if the server maintained inbox is kept relatively small. This method has long been superceeded by the IMAP mode of connection which does not have to download already downloaded emails and attachments in order to get a reference list of what is on the server to compare to local.
Allowing the list on the server to grow more than a screen's worth (24 - 30 messages) can put a strain on your software and possibly invoke dreaded network timeouts should the process encounter even one large attached file.
A few years ago the Internet developed and adopted the IMAP mode of email communication to receive message headers only and better support multiple workstation / synchronization tools used by client email software such as Outlook.
