What's Hot | | | See below letter from AT&T regarding enhanced security on it's residential class mailserver-relays:
Subject: Dedicated Business Outbound Mail Service
This notice is intended for all AT&T Dedicated Business customers who use the following outbound mailers.
smtp.snet.net smtp.sbcglobal.net mail.swbell.net mail.pacbell.net mailhost.xxx.ameritech.net (where 'xxx' is a region code)
These mailers would be used as either the outbound SMTP server in E-mail clients (such as Outlook or Outlook Express) or as an outbound relay, outbound gateway, or 'Smart host' while running a mail service such as Microsoft Exchange.
The above mailers are 'residential class' services and as such are a constant source of outbound mail abuse. In order to deter that abuse, AT&T will be implementing an authentication requirement on the above mailers effective 07/09/2007, which will require an internet userid and password (i.e., using an AT&T internet account in the sbcglobal.net, pacbell.net, etc., domains).
Business customers utilizing the above mailers are required to change to Please contact the National IP Resource Center (NIPRC) with any questions or problems related to this change at 1-866-937-3664.
** Note that remaining on the prior mail setting will result in an outbound mail sending problem effective 07/09/2007.
Thank you for your cooperation in AT&T's efforts to deter outbound mail abuse and provide a business class outbound mail service to our business customers.

Dell Batteries | | | Sony batteries in Dell, Mac and now Sony Vaio notebooks, are being recalled. See Visit this page for more information.
Northeast Utilities/Connecticut Light and Power announce 21.5% increase in 2006. 17.5% on Jan 1 and 5% in April. A huge increase for power yet what they say they need to maintain reliable service. We're pretty disgusted with these folks. Where we hear a lot about their promotionals, offers and interest in gaining public opinion, hear nothing concerning securing Connecticut's energy grid against widespread outages such as happened in 2004.
Northeast Utilities/Connecticut Light and Power to sell assets along Housatonic and Shepaug Rivers. Yes the lakes are for sale along with the equipment to generate electicity. NU will focus on distribution (it's core business).
We get a new banner from our new up-market Flash introduction www.connecticutwebsite.com Hotmail/MSN are having problems with their new security. They are now selling whitelist access. 11 out of 16 of Hotmails MX servers seem OK when we tested, 5 established no connection.

SBC, at least in the Northeast has imposed SMTP Port 25 restriction to their default SMTP relay. Fill-out the form at SBC site and wait (up to 12 hours) for a reply. Use web-email or admin access in the meantime.
Other service providers will also follow suit. You'll be able to receive email but but not send when this happens.
Thank the spam industry for all these precautionary measures and accept delays while service providers adjust settings. Visit your ISP's website and see if you can subscribe to your ISP's appropriate security topic email or general purpose subscriber list so you can be informed of these changes? |

Domain Bash | | | | The Netsol Web Design Homepage | Manipulation of an existing domain name at some places can be next to impossible.
There are several avenues to explore.
1. Dredge the nefarious username and password that Network Solutions (Netsol) gave out for the domain. (duma@someisp.com may have it) or the client in some original paperwork or subsequent email.
2. Ask the old ISP if he will repoint his DNS records for the domain to our IP addresses. (If netsol refuses to move this may become permanent)
3. The existing ISP or (failing that) the firm direct contact Netsol and begin the arduous process of establishing identity and requesting changes to their current profile to ns.iacl.com and dns.iacl.com.
4. Transfer domain (but this never works!) someone would have to unlock domain and duma@someisp.com would have to approve it twice. But Netsol are so far out of the loop that this doesn't seem to work any more.
I tried to repoint DNS recently with a customer and Netsol were very hard to deal with. We're still using (2) above whereby an old ISP is maintaining records for a new ISP failing any action on their part.

Host UnreachableMail Host is unreachable or otherwise the connection is not going through.
Spammers continually test a mail host's limits, sometimes causing brief network connectivity problems.
There may be issues with your email going through that originate with your broadband connection or somewhere "in the middle".

The MS MethodThe methods $ has used to gain market share in computer software sales follow certain trends and after a fashion have remained consistent since the foundation of their company. The usual effective methods include direct marketing through print and other media distribution. This marketing in many ways is successful but in many ways becomes the company's "real" product while generally the product itself (the working software) when released is 1/2 to a full generation behind other software that concentrates on the engineered product more than it does on the advertising campaign.
$ was "broken up" by the U.S. Government when it took on the U.S. Government in various anti-trust suits. Among other things, the coercion placed on computer manufacturers such as Dell to only use $ Operating system in it's computers stands out as one of the worst examples of their highly aggressive marketing behavior.
From a software development standpoint the word processor/spreadsheet wars, the graphics, network terminal and later web browser wars were all termed as "wars" whereby a visibly inferior engineered product is foisted above other more mature products through heavy print and media marketing. "email" may be undergoing a similar transformation.
This focus on $ products through well-devised print and media campaigns is what serves to drive market penetration in new market segments for them while the software itself is generally "catching up".
In other words it can be said that in their the rush to compete and win, the hype and marketing goes way out in front of the technical operation of the product. When this happens you have a product, typically with a big price tag, that doesn't work as well as other commercially available products that work better, been around longer and even cost less. In word processing, graphics, networking, browsers (and others) all had mature, superior products that were well engineered and in place when $ took interest.
Once $ reaches approximately 35% - 55% penetration into a desired market segment, it is happy and very good at canvassing specific industry periodicals to make their product look like the only "real" choice. (maybe $ ought to be required to pay for competing products advertisments, thus offering alternate choice)

The Vista ScreamMS plans to not offer Windows XP to computer integrators meaning come next year, the only option most people will have when buying a system is Vista.
These people really like to put you in the straightjacket. New Windows operating systems are always an adventure. Sales of boxed copy of XP were "way lower" than predicted and it is now presumed the end of "shrink-wrap software" is closer than anticipated. |
