Search EnginesThe browsers have a method whereby if a user puts in wrong information. (They put in "artist lamps" in the browser URL line and not the search field, i.e. someone who is new or confused) It is possible to buy or own certain words or combination of words but you have to contact the browser in question to see what programs exist and what the costs are.
Another Search Engine Method is to make all your URL's append the desired word or phrase. Some examples:
www.daylightcompany.com/artistlamps/ www.daylightcompany.com/flyfishing/
Ad Campaigns are another method of increasing one's exposure to a search engine. Google has such a program where you can specify an add, some keywords to put against an add (the add itself could be many) and how much $$$ you wish to pit against each keyword with useful daily and monthly limits which are necessary when you tie a credit card number against a search engine's click through.
Froogle and Yahoo have database upload capacity for large inventories. Once approved you have the ability to send a database of your products image URL's description and "category" uploaded to the search engine. Equally a lot of work - for Froogle you are required to update at least monthly and of course you need a properly formatted csv databse of all your products. Here is where we can associate a weak product URL such as http://www.mysite.com/?/s/6 to a good URL such as http://www.mysite.com/artistlamps. Froogle and Yahoo each take their database somewhat differently and there are different rules but you are now directly pumping in data associated with images, descriptions and the all important categories with your hand on the stick, so to speak. (see 2 above)
Reciprocol links page is another method but is labor intensive in that you want to provide a quality list of links making sure none are dead and making sure your link is still on the other site's page.
HTML page code, metatags, title & page content should all re-emphasise the product's keywords. Taken on a page by page basis this could be itself a large undertaking. Avoid using the color "FFFFFF" (white) this has been used to put in "hidden text" that is for the benefit of the search engine and would otherwise confuse or mislead the human reading the page. IG has fields under "System" whereby you can define title, keywords and description and IG does all the necessary formatting.
